Boots Clinic – Central Birmingham
The Boots Clinic provides both booked and walk in appointments with senior nursing staff.
We can test for all sexually transmitted infections at our Boots clinic. You can also obtain advice on contraception at the same visit. If you also need contraception advice, please let our receptionists know.
Who should not attend Boots?
Our clinic at Boots is not designed for patients with complex history. This means:
- Women with abdominal pain, pain during sex, unusual discharge, sores and ulcers
- Men with urethral discharge, sores, ulcers or swollen testicles
Patients with complex history (any of the above symptoms) should not attend the clinic at Boots but should come to Whittall Street Clinic
Services we offer at Boots:
-
Free and accurate testing for sexually transmitted infections (STI)
We use the best and most accurate tests for the diagnosis of chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, and HIV. We can also diagnose warts when clinically indicated.
-
Free treatment for STIs
All medicines provided at our clinics are free of charge. We treat most STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, and trichomonas) with one dose of antibiotics. Most of these medicines can be taken as pills except for treatment of syphilis and some cases of gonorrhoea.
-
HIV testing
This is a blood test that detects antibodies against HIV. We inform most of our patients of their HIV test result within 5 normal working days.
-
Confidential service
We do not share your attendance information with any other organisation. We do not use your name on your specimens. Instead, we use a unique number that is only meaningful to our department.
-
Vaccination for hepatitis B infection
We offer hepatitis B vaccination for people who are at risk of getting Hepatitis B infection through sex. Immunisation to Hepatitis B can only be achieved after three injections.
-
Emergency contraception
This is a service for women who are not on any method of contraception who have had sex. We can offer emergency contraception for up to five days after sex. The effect of the medicines is strongest when taken with least delay. It is therefore important to attend our clinic as soon as possible.
-
Assisting you to inform your sexual partners if you have been diagnosed with an STI
When diagnosed with an STI, it is important to inform all your partners (casual, ex-, and current), so that they can be tested and treated too. This may be quite stressful for some of the patients. Some may be concerned about their confidentiality. Our trained nurses and health advisors can discreetly assist you on this aspect without compromising your confidentiality.
-
Contraception advice and counselling
We work closely with the Reproductive and Sexual Health Clinic in Birmingham. We offer contraception service in our clinics at Boots too. We refer our patients in need of complex contraception management.
-
Free condoms
We offer a wide range of different types and sizes of condom free of charge when attending for an STI screen. We also provide training on how to use them correctly.
-
Pregnancy testing
We offer free pregnancy testing for anyone who thinks they may be pregnant. The test takes just five minutes and results are given immediately. We advise all women seeking pregnancy testing to have STI screening too.
-
Appointment within 2 normal working days for most of our patients
We realise that concern about STI can cause anxiety and stress. We therefore aim to see most our patients within 2 normal working days.
-
Walk-in clinics
We offer walk-in clinics on a first-come first-serve basis. Our walk-in appointments are limited in number. You will be offered an appointment at the earliest available time if a walk-in appointment was not available. Please note that you may need to wait for an hour before being seen.
How to book an appointment?
You can book an appointment online, or via the phone. You can also just pop in when you want. You may need to wait a bit longer to be seen compared to those who book their appointment.
